This means that aside from the wonderful talents of Sid Griffin, Tim Wells & Ralegh Long and the Primary 3, you will also have a chance to help an organisation whose
purpose is to protect people wherever justice, fairness, freedom and truth are denied.

Amnesty carries out the most unbelievably awesome work, including recently campaigning for the freedom of Bands & Book's favourite feminist punk protest band Pussy Riot. If you're not familiar with the story of the arrest and detention of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich, it would do you no harm at all to read a little more on the subject.

Bands & Books is not known for political activism, but when we see bands getting arrested for reading poetry in a church, we get upset. For that reason, we are proud to support Amnesty international and stand shoulder to shoulder with luminous balaclava clad feminist activists the world over!

With the Slits book, I'd listen not only to the Slits but also Lilliput, The Pop Group, Prince Far I, the Raincoats, Public Image Limited, Flying Lizards - all artists who feature heavily in my record collection anyway. The Who and Pete Townshend's solo work has always inspired me, at once muscular and sensitive, questioning and incisive, and I also find the openness and often mystical bent of Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green and beyond) puts me in a good frame of mind for writing. They were all poets anyway.
We first encountered Stuart performing in the basement of the Queen of Hoxton at a night notable for the warning signs on the way in, informing everyone they would be subjected to the potentially harmful effects of live smoking. This turned out to be a requirement for performers wishing to exercise the legal loophole allowing them to smoke indoors. The performance itself was a reading from Stuart's debut book, 10 Stories About Smoking, which came out on Picador in 2011. The first Bands & Books of 2012, and the first one in our new home of Power Lunches in Dalston took place on Sunday the 29th May. Thanks to everyone who came down, thanks to Abigail, Zolan, Sibyl & the rest of God's Mama, Morte Point, James "Evey" Eve and the guy who did the sound. And the barmaid. For those of you that didn't make it, here is a little taste of what you missed.
Band Profile: God's Mama

I don't think I have the right vocabulary to describe just how much we at Bands & Books HQ are looking forward to this one! Let's just say we're jittering about and listening to this epic performance on Tom Robinson's 6 Music show, and generally feeling woozy.

Yes WOOZY, that's what I came up with.

Now, for those who have yet to encounter God's Mama, here's their bio (spoiler, think of the perfect possible band for Bands & Books; that):

Where so many female vocalists in Really Heavy Bands play on the contrast with whispers, drawls, or exaggerated girlishness, Sibyl Madrigal, a Texan performance poet, growls and snarls to match the post-punk / slowcore grind, making this a mixture of Swampland and Spiderland ...

... 20 years ago, Kim Gordon deadpanned: “England didn’t invent punk-rock; girls did.” True, the girls of this decade’s post-punk revival have lasted longer than most, but God’s Mama point to the flaw: where are the older Women making punk? (written by Michael Mellor, Nov 2010)

On drums, Lee Morris is arguably the most bitchin' powere drummer in the world of rock! And yes they're brothers too.

We are the tightest, mightiest, strangest band to bend the rock world in years, at least since Janis Joplin's first furtive fumblings with Patti Smith.

Helping us to comply with rule #2 is Abigail Tarttelin:
Her book FLICK, a big ball of quirkiness, sex, drugs, humour and sorrow, bashed onto the scene in 2011, receiving rave reviews from, amongst others, GQ.com, who predicted FLICK to be a 'slow burn cult classic'. Abby has read before at many a Literary Death Match and is looking forward to the mash-up of music and words that is Bands and Books. They take their cues from rock's minimalist past, but the shadowy world they create is entirely their own.
We asked Morte Point for some literary reference points, and quickly learned that this is possibly the most literary band we've ever worked with - a perfect storm of Bands & Books:

A recent discovery is Edward Thomas' poetry, and I rediscovered Raymond Carver's short story collections. I'm looking forward to reading Cathedral, which I just bought. I also loved the film of The Hunger Games, which is a great adaptation of a fantastic children's novel.

I was recently inspired by the triumvirate of novels from American heavyweight authors Jonathan Franzen, Jennifer Egan and Jeffrey Eugenides: Freedom, A Visit From The Goon Squad and The Marriage Plot are three of the best novels I have ever read and proof that the American novel is as healthy as ever.
Writers I am intending to read soon:
I'm talking about the dirty love letters written by James Joyce, Gustav Flaubert, Charles Bukowski, Franz Kafka, Oscar Wilde and more.

When literary titans such as these turn their considerable talent to wooing, you better believe they come out with some great lines. I'm sure one or two of you reading this blog will have at some stage attempted to tackle James Joyce's epic masterpiece Ulysees. I will admit not getting on with it myself, however had it contained more prose along the lines of his letter to Nora Barnacle in 1909, I suspect I might have made better progress:

I am delighted to see that you do like being fucked arseways. - James Joyce

Charles Bukowski writing to Linda King in 1972 can teach us all a little something about romance:

"...you, up against the refrigerator, you have such a wonderful refrigerator"

These and many more gems can be found over at Flavorwire, enjoy!

Meanwhile, we are gearing up for a super exciting Spring time Bands & Books announcement, so watch this space!
Originally a three piece (Alex joined at the end of 2009) the band recorded their self-titled debut album 'The Bishops' at the infamous Toe Rag Studios, produced by creative analogue genius Liam Watson. This was released internationally in 2007 and followed up with their second album 'For Now' in 2009. Later that year the band celebrated their 500th gig at the historic 100 club in London.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">Heralding from London, the band consist of twin brothers Mike Bishop (vocals, guitar) Pete Bishop (vocals, bass), younger brother Alex Bishop (vocals, guitar) and Scotsman Chris McConville (drums).
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">
Since then the band have grown from a three piece to a four piece lineup, welcoming younger brother Alex Bishop into the band. This year they released an EP 'Sojourn', their first material together. It marked a departure from the prominent garage/beat sound of their first two records into a more contemporary and alternative direction. The band are currently recording a brand new album which looks set for release next year. At the Bands & Books Xmas party the band will be playing new songs from their forthcoming album!

As is customary, we wanted to find out what's in the bishop's library, they gave us the following tidbits:

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Mike: I've enjoyed recently 'The Master & Margherita' by Mikhail Bulgakov as well as 'Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck being one of my all-time favourites.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> Pete: Favourite book 'Tropic of Cancer' Henry Miller. If anything is evident in the world of music, having a DIY attitude gets things done. The Pixies did it in 1987 with the ‘Purple Tape’ and Sub Pop changed an industry from the ‘inside out’ in the 1990s with the same ’can-do’ attitude. It’s happening all over again with Mostar Records and Tied To The Mast.

Embracing a cacophony of sounds, and melding the DNA strands of Nirvana & Sonic Youth, the haemoglobin ‘Plain Lazy’ debut single brings together the slacker art rock of Beck & Pavement, whilst sitting comfortably alongside the British song-writing of the Kinks and Supergrass. Tied To The Mast create a Frankenstein monster of Alt Rock that submerges influences from both sides of the Atlantic to create a sound that is distinctly their own.

Recorded, produced and mastered in their own studio somewhere in the depths of the South Downs in Sussex, their debut Mostar single begins to hint at the band’s wider sound – one that is explosively evident during their live sets and brings together an organic product of bone crushing riffs, barstool sing-a-longs and sundrenched tunes. Tied to the Mast are setting sail for higher ground, so pull up a chair, a bottle of rum and come on board.
The debut single 'Plain Lazy', released through Mostar Records has also gained some great reviews:

"It has a haunting feel of old Pavement songs, of old Blur vibes and I reckon that this is the start of a beautiful reign for this band... It's another song to make memories to before the sun leaves us for another year" The Indie Swan
"Big mesmerizing guitar sounds and some poppy vocals that compliment each other perfectly" Fake Plastic Tunes
"Less is more and Plain Lazy, is nothing but lethargic, but fantastic" RoomThirteen.com
"Tied To The Mast have managed to encapsulate the slacker-grunge pop made famous by Nirvana.. and are already stamping their authority on the music world"
